UBS role in Dubai-Almatis deal is big vote for leveraged finance

A vote of confidence was given to Europe's leveraged finance market by Swiss bank UBS AG, which has underwritten the biggest debt package on a private equity acquisition since the beginning of the credit crisis this summer. UBS is the sole underwriter backing Dubai International Capital's acquisition of Germany's Almatis, an aluminum producer. Although the value was not disclosed, it is estimated to be $1.2 bil.

Ashley launches effort to acquire Newcastle United

Mike Ashley and his company St. James Holdings Ltd. have acquired a 41.6% stake in Newcastle United PLC, a U.K. football club, a deal amounting to 55.3 mil shares. St. James Holdings is planning to obtain all Newcastle shares at the previous deal's share price, which was $1.96 per share.
