U.K. Cable Group CWC posts gains in sales, profit

Cable & Wireless Communications, UK's largest cable TV company, reported 151 million pound-sterling in pretax profit before special charges for the year ended Mar. 31, 1998, compared with a pro forma 80 million pound-sterling the prior year. Including 200 million pound-sterling of exceptional charges for reorganization, the company had a pretax loss of 49 million pound-sterling. Company CEO Graham Wallace said the company's first annual results demonstrate that the company has reached the critical mass necessary to become profitable. The company was formed in 1997 by the merger of Videotron, Bell Cablemedia, Nynex Cablecomms and Mercury Communications.

MTV pulls plug in Amsterdam on channel-sharing stipulation

Viacom Inc. has shut off its international pop-music television channel MTV in Amsterdam in the Netherlands following the ruling of the local cable authority, the Amsterdam Programming Council, to have the network share its channel with two other stations. Brent Hansen, president and CEO of MTV Europe and VH1, said that it was not economically feasible to air MTV only during the prescribed time of midnight to 8 a.m. considering the high carrying fees charged by the A2000 cable system. Affected by the MTV shut off is an estimated 500,000 homes in Amsterdam and the nearby area.
