U.K. bank's fall in profit damps hopes on Asia

Standard Chartered PLC posted a decline of 35% in its pretax profits for the first-half of 1999. The British-based bank posted 271 million pound sterling (411 million euros) in pretax profits for the period. During the same period in 1998, Standard Chartered reported 416 million pound sterling. The bank hopes of a fast recovery in the Asian region were lessened with the first-half figures.
