UK rail franchising proceeds apace
Article Abstract:
The U.K. government has awarded the first four rail franchises as part of its rail privatisation scheme. Sea Containers' Great Northern Railway arm has been awarded the franchise to operate the InterCity East Coast route and will be awarded a subsidy of 64.6 million pounds sterling in 1996-97, falling away to zero by 2002-03.
