US/AUSTRIA: CHRYSLER REVIEWS VOYAGER PRODUCTION

According to Automotive News, Chrysler is considering to concentrate the production of the Voyager in the US. The situation is to be reviewed by the end of February 2001. If DaimlerChrysler decides to make the minivan in the US only, Eurostar in Graz, Austria, will be left merely with the production of the PT Cruiser. Since it is a new model, the success of the PT Cruiser remains to be seen. The production of the new Voyager model was scheduled to start at Eurostar in the next few days. Sch 900mn has been spent on the production facilities.

DaimlerChrysler AG sold Chrysler and Mercedes vehicles worth Sch 36bn in Austria in 1999. Due to the integration of Chrysler, turnover grew by Sch 10bn over the previous year. DaimlerChrysler produced 122,800 vehicles in Graz, up 35%. The group produces in Austria the Jeep Cherokee, the Chrysler Voyager, the four-wheel version of the Mercedes E-class, the off-road vehicle Mercedes G, and the M-class. Also Chrysler's PT-Cruiser is to be assembled in Graz later on. DaimlerChrysler doubled its purchasing volume in Austria to Sch 24bn.

Austria: Magna Steyr to produce hydrogen car tank
Article Abstract:
The Austrian automotive manufacturer, Magna Steyr, is to collaborate with BMW on its hydrogen car. Magna Steyr is to produce the tank. It is expected that the development costs will be similar to those of a conventional car. Magna Steyr is also producing BMW's X3.
