US Airways places order to buy 30 wide-body jets from Airbus

US Airways Group is placing an order for its first 30 wide-body A330-300 jetliners from Airbus Industrie. US Airways has already placed an order for over 400 Airbus planes, 125 of these orders firm. The new deal includes seven firm orders for the planes, seven more orders that still need confirmation, and options on 16 more. Basing on the list price, the agreement has a value of $3.7 billion. Airbus, however, agreed to a lower figure, according to US Airways chairman Stephen Wolf. The first plane is scheduled to be delivered in the first quarter of 1999, with six more set to be delivered in 2000.

Swissair beats its rivals for stake in Poland's lot

Swissair has beaten its competitors to enter exclusive talks for a strategic partnership with Lot, the state-owned Polish airline. Poland's state Treasury announced Wednesday that Swissair parent SAirGroup was chosen after competing against British Airways and Lufthansa. Final terms of the deal, which could close by the end of 1999, have not yet been determined, said a Swissair spokesman.
