Goldilocks or gridlock?
Article Abstract:
US consumer prices changed little in May 1999, following a rise in April. There is still concern that the US economy could be overheating. US interest rates were not raised in May 1999, though a bias toward tightening policy was noted. There is strong growth in US domestic demand, and companies and households are borrowing heavily. Wages could rise due to the tightness of the labor market. The Federal Reserve could keep inflation low through a rise in interest rates, while stock prices and consumption could be pushed to dangerous levels if rates are not raised.
