US Navy evaluates air-to-surface missile options
Article Abstract:
The US Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR) has awarded a $300,000 contract to Israel Military Industries (IMI) for a three-month risk-reduction study on a helicopter-launched version of IMI's Light Defender air-to-surface missile. The study would focus on the addition of a rocket booster that would allow for helicopter launch. NAVAIR is interested in a missile with a range longer than that of the Hellfire for use with SH-60Rs. This would give combat helicopters the ability to engage targets ranging in size from cruisers to small high-speed boats at extended ranges.
