UK gives green light to MLS
Article Abstract:
BAA of the UK, an airport operator, is due to turn out tenders for category III microwave landing systems (MLS) for a minimum of two London airports in 1998, according to Paul Willis, head of the navigation section of the airport division of the UK's Air Traffic Services. The need for an MLS was underscored by airlines concerned about the threat to instrument landing system (ILS) signals brought about by construction around airports. The CAA is looking to begin operating the MLS systems by March 2000.

Airlines challenge satellite costs
Article Abstract:
Most European airlines are against the proposed European Geostationary Navigation Overlay System (EGNOS), saying the costs far outweigh the benefits. EGNOS is designed principally to support category one approaches. Mike Ambrose, director-general of the European REgions Airline Assn, said its airline members do not have a need for EGNOS and are complaining over the inclusion of the system's development costs in Eurocontrol charges.
