U.S. and Hong Kong spin out data in their battle over garment trade
Article Abstract:
U.S. garment manufacturers are presenting data to prove that their Hong Kong counterparts are engaged in unscrupulous activities. Washington has requested the U.S. Customs Service to inspect Hong Kong garment factories which it claims are violating US quota restrictions. The accusation was based on data provided by the American Textile Manufacturers Institute, which show a 2.3% increase in the production of Hong Kong garment factories in 1995 despite a 61% decrease in garment workers. In its defense, Hong Kong claims that Washington is misinterpreting data to protect US garment makers from competitive imports.
