Hong Kong, U.S. reach partial pact on textiles

US and Hong Kong customs officials have reached a partial settlement concerning illegal textile transshipments. The US have been imposing strict entry requirements to Hong Kong clothing exporters and their US clients since June 1996. The agreement includes increased visits to Hong Kong apparel factories to ensure that garments labeled 'Made in Hong Kong' are actually manufactured in the country.

Article Abstract:
US apparel companies are confident that there will be no increase in newly cheap imports from Asia even in the midst of the sharp currency declines in the region. Contrary to assumptions, 1997 textile-trade data indicate the Asian crisis may even accelerate a long-term switch in US textile imports from East Asia to Central America and South Asia. China and Hong Kong rank as the first and second top suppliers of apparel to the US.
