U.S. demonstrates its leadership strength - for now
Article Abstract:
The US' position as the sole superpower in the world was bolstered by the ongoing economic crisis in East Asia. Apparently the predominant military power, the US is advancing its edge over rivals due to its technological know-how. Nonetheless, some Asian countries are criticizing the US for being too slow in rescuing troubled economies. Moreover, the International Monetary Fund is attacked for demanding recession, unemployment and bankruptcies in exchange for economic assistance.

How high the price for China's ascendancy?
Article Abstract:
Competition for exports and investments in Asia is expected to increase dramatically when China joins the World Trade Organization (WTO). In Asean Secretary General Rodolfo Severino's 2000 report, China is forecast to take over 10% of existing foreign investment from other Asian countries when it joins the WTO. China's economic dominance may cause unsettlement in the region, unless it takes a stance of Asian complementarity.
