U.S. diplomats prepare for tough game in wake of North Korean nuclear deal
Article Abstract:
US negotiators believe that the US may find it difficult to guarantee North Korea's compliance with the recently-concluded nuclear reactor agreement. They noted the North Koreans can easily create several simple reasons to renege on their commitments. Moreover, US chief negotiator Robert Gallucci stated that North Korea's true objective was to establish close economic relations with the US alone to halt its economic decline. Gallucci revealed that the North Koreans had offered to sign a peace treaty with the US alone, exempting South Korea and other UN members which participated in the Korean War. However, he stressed that the US will not enter into such agreements without ensuring lasting peace between the two Koreas.
