US shrimpers told 'change to fight farmers' - sell on superior taste

Flemming Frederiksen, president of Louisiana based Laitram Machinery is of the opinion that the US shrimpers and processors will simply have to improve on quality and cost effectiveness of operations. The observation was made in view of the competition being faced by the industry from farmed shrimps.

US shrimpers fear more low prices

Low prices are causing little interest for shrimpers, even though masses of northern shrimp are located near the Oregon coast. A catch of 41.5 million lb was brought in last year by Oregon shrimpers, and they earned only $0.27/lb.

Cephalopod catch stays above 3m tonnes

At the Agadir conference in Morroco, the worldwide harvesting of cephalopods was reported to be 3 million tones. The market for cephalopods is still strong in Asia, and sales in Europe and North America are expected to increase.
