The last despot?
Article Abstract:
Sani Abacha was a Nigerian despot who ruled until 1998, and was seen as so incompetent and cruel that the military would be rejected as future rulers of Nigeria. Criminals were shot before they could appeal, and Ken Saro-Wiwa, novelist, was hanged, an act that prompted Nigeria's expulsion from the Coomnwealth. The winner of the 1993 election looked likely to be Moshood Abiola, but the vote count was canceled, and Abiola was imprisoned and died in jail. Human rights abuses are being investigated, and democracy is popular in Nigeria.

Corruption has existed for so long that it has become part of Nigerian culture, but cultures can change. There is hope that the new government can bring about change, and there appears to be a will to tackle the problem of corruption.
