Article Abstract:

The rulers of Vietnam and Burma are accepting changes now that will mean increased public scrutiny and attention, and lead to social evolution. Both countries spent decades in isolation until, in the same week, the US gave diplomatic recognition to Vietnam's government and Burma's rulers freed Aung San Suu Kyi from house arrest. Both actions represent enlightened self-interest and constructive engagement, made with short-term goals in mind but with longer-term benefits that should affect everyone.
