Under the microscope
Article Abstract:
The US Army's Armed Forces Research Institute of Medical Science (Afrims) has recommended an AIDS vaccine test to the Thai government. The AIDS vaccine, manufactured by MicroGeneSys Corp and which is called GP160 has already been tested in the US. Afrims and other US firms and medical agencies consider Thailand an appropriate test area for AIDS vaccines because of its high incidence rate for HIV and its established public health system, which boasts of modern facilities and competent medical staff. The Thai government's approval for the program has been delayed in view of public outcry against using Thais as test individuals.

Mechai's AIDS education campaign has been reinforced by AIDS public service announcements run on radio and television stations every half-hour. His PDA has also activated an HIV team composed of five HIV-positive victims who talk of the disease in public fora.

Thailand's business sector cannot afford to ignore the country's AIDS epidemic. Officials estimate that around 200-500,000 Thais are infected with the HIV virus. Similarly, laws are being drafted to protect HIV carriers from future employment discrimination. Some businesses have also embarked on AIDS awareness programs in order to allay unfounded fears regarding the disease.
