Under the orange canopy
Article Abstract:
The 'pojang macha,' or pushcart pedlars, is one of the most dynamic segments of South Korea's small-business sector. Easily recognized by their orange vinyl canopies, the pedlars dot the back streets of many cities. Apart from occassional government crackdowns, pedlars operate largely without government regulation. A well-established pedlar could earn as much as Won 6 million ($7,700) a year, tax-free. Peddling spots, once claimed, could either be sold or handed to the next generation. Some brand-name clothing and accessories corporations have had to buy out pedlars of counterfeit products.

Revving up
Article Abstract:
Investors in Astra International, an Indonesian car manufacturer, have increased the its stock price from the 12-month low reached on the Jakarta exchange in Nov 1993. This rise has restored faith in Astra's soundness, which is important due to its 10% share of Jakarta's Composite Index and potential for reviving the Indonesian economy. However, several factors indicate that this rise may be transitory. These factors include Astra's status as a holding company comprising 100 ventures, its indebtedness and government plans for deregulation.

Shades of Capt. Bligh
Article Abstract:
Inhuman conditions prevail on board South Korean deep-sea fishing boats, where crew members are often beaten up by their officers. The National Fisherman's Victims Association led by Hwang Kyung Yon, himself a victim, has been instrumental in bringing to light, the sorry state of the seamen. Hwang's campaign led the government to prohibit officers accused of violence against crew members from going to sea for one year. However, the law is not being applied as strictly as it should be.
