Undercurrent in Singapore
Article Abstract:
The growing optimism among investors and businessmen toward smaller firms in Singapore is attributed to the positive economic outlook for 1997 in the island-state. One factor to consider is the expected rebound of the global electronic cycle, which can trigger bigger revenues for many electronic producers in Singapore, following a decline in 1996. Revenue growth of smaller firms is expected to average 15% to 20%, or even 30% for some, in 1997. Furthermore, the stock prices of smaller firms are traded lower at an average price/earnings ratio of 12 to 15 times the forecasted revenue for 1997.

Angst saps flows in bond funds
Article Abstract:
Asian bond funds are not expected to perform well during the second half of 1997, in spite of the sluggish equity markets, which have traditionally driven investors to bonds. Guinness Flight Asia Ltd.'s fund manager Daniel Hemmant expects a continued outflow of funds following the currency problems plaguing a number of Asian central banks, most notably Thailand's. Meanwhile Guinness Flight Asia-Pacific Currency & Bond Fund experienced an increase in redemptions, causing a drop in assets to $60 million in July 1997 from $69 million at the beginning of the year.
