Unequal partners: Taiwan and China
Article Abstract:
Taiwan's business community is having some disagreement over how much to invest in mainland China. Taiwan has a ban on direct trade with China, but since 1988, Taiwan's businesses have invested more than $30 mil in China. However, Taiwan Pres. Lee Tenghui has suggested that there are dangers in investing too much in China, and recently, a plan by Formosa Plastics to construct a $3 mil power plant in China was cancelled. Also, Taiwan's Council for Economic Planning and Development has rescinded a plan that would have increased limits for investing in China.

Uncertainty in Taiwan
Article Abstract:
Lee Teng-hui is to leave his post as president of Taiwan in spring 2000, and optimists hope for a strengthening of democracy with a real contest for the presidency. There could also be an improvement in relations with China, though neither assumption should be taken for granted. Patronage is important in Taiwan, and corruption may hamper democracy. Taiwanese nationalism amy also be an important theme in the elections, and relations with China will not necessarily improve.
