Paper and pulp mills have rebounded from recession and are now mostly operating at 90% capacity, with paper prices double those of late 1993. Companies remain cautious, and plans to build new plants are conservative. Earnings data, market projections in Europe and North America are discussed.

Usage of paper is increasing despite talk of a paperless office. The spread of personal computers coincided with increased consumption of paper, and hard copies are important despite e-mails and electronic publishing. Books are flexible in terms of where and how they are read.
