Unicredit, Societe Generale talk: creation of world's fourth-biggest bank faces many hurdles

UniCredit S.p.A. of Italy is exploring the possibility of a merger with France's Societe Generale S.A., a deal which would create a cross-border entity with market capitalization of around $193 bil, approximately 57 mil customers and 10,200 branches. The deal would also test the willingness of national governments to permit foreign ownership in an era of increasing protectionism.

Mediobanca logs 36% profit jump as unit fees rise

Mediobanca S.p.A. of Italy posted soaring profit increases by 36 percent for the fiscal year to 858.4 million Euros ($1.09 billion) from 632.4 million Euros last year. Revenues were partly due to a strong performance in the wholesale-banking unit.
