Up and running
Article Abstract:
Taiwan President Lee Teng-hui's Aug 23 announcement of his candidacy in the island's first popular presidential election was no great surprise but is sure to stir fierce debate. Mainland China has in recent months harshly criticized him, contributing to a split in Lee's Kuomintang party, with many convinced that the poor relations with China are his fault. His chief rival is now Chen Li-an, a former KMT official who startled analysts with his Aug 17, 1995, decision to run. Within the KMT, Deputy-Chairman Lin Yang-kang also seeks the post.

Lee's challenge
Article Abstract:
Persistent Chinese pressure on Taiwan in recent months highlights the need for a renewed dialogue, such as the one Beijing suspended in June 1995. China's anger over Taiwan President Lee Teng-hui's international activities has also been expressed in harsh rhetoric and military threats, raising fears that the mainland might yet invade what it considers a wayward province. Events have split Taiwanese along pro-independence and pro-reconciliation camps, rather than party lines, as Taiwan's first presidential elections approach.

Parting of the ways
Article Abstract:
Elections to Taiwan's Legislative Yuan, scheduled for Dec 19, 1992, will have an impact on Taiwanese politics and Sino-Taiwan relations. The elections will settle the question of unification with mainland China, favored by government conservatives, but opposed by the public who prefer a dual-China policy. Moreover, a completely Taiwanese parliament will be elected for the first time since 1949 because older leaders elected from China were forced to resign.
