New and improving D & B
Article Abstract:
The Design Build Foundation is aiming to alter the perception of the Design and Build (D&B) building procurement method. Clients tend to associate D&B with low-cost, poor-quality architecture, but the Foundation is promoting two central principles of D&B to demonstrate its improved quality and its attractiveness as an option. The Foundation promotes D&B as being design-led, which includes a focus on the clients' quality requirements, and as offering clients a single point of responsibility. The Foundation is also working with the industry to ensure high standards.

A more private life: Gloucestershire
Article Abstract:
Gloucestershire Building Consultancy (GBC) is the commercial arm of Gloucestershire County Council's Property Services Department. The Council has encouraged GBC to develop an entrepreneurial approach to business in preparation for some form of privatization. Although plans for privatization have not been finalised, GBC is implementing managerial and cultural changes as well as planning to reduce staff and other costs. At present GBC cannot legally compete for outside work but it is developing marketing strategies for its Council and other public clients.

The Design-Build Institute
Article Abstract:
Design and build has been widely adopted in the UK, and accounted for 23% of construction in 1996. This approach tends to give more time and cost certainty than more traditional methods of procurement, but quality can vary considerably. However, many observers believe that there is considerable potential to extend the use of design and build. The creation of a Design-Build Institute, which is scheduled to take place in Oct 1997, will ensure that standards of design and build work improve.
