VANISHING Cos' DIRECTORS MAY FACE THE STICK FROM CENTRE
Article Abstract:
The government of India plans to stop the directors of the vanishing companies from taking up any other directorship for a period of five years. The move is aimed at disciplining the promoters/directors in the Indian corporate sector. The move also tries to protect the Indian investors. At present, the promoters/directors are liable only if a criminal case its filed against them under the Indian Penal Code. Their responsibility is limited up to their financial liability in the vanishing company. Currently, the directors of the vanishing companies are not debarred from being appointed on the boards of the other companies including the group companies. (ag)(m)

The association between Indian Space Research Organisation and the industry has strengthened the research base of the country. More than 500 companies are contributing to India's space programme. According to the department of space's 1997-98 annual report, the industry has received four new technologies during the year. The industry till now has received 231 technologies and over 180 consultancy programmes have been taken up. The new products and processes transferred to the industry include ISROFLEX heaters, 1.8 and 2.4 m diameter off-set fed antenna and FRP winding on the ceramic stacks for LF transducers. (gs)

The Government of Tamil Nadu aims to make the State 100 percent computer-literate in the next 10 years. The State Government will sign a pact with Mr Sam Pitroda on September 7, 1998, for providing community Internet access centres all over the State in the next one year. The Government has set up the Tamil Nadu Institute of Information Technology (Tanitec) with an investment of Rs70 crore. It has invited private IT (information technology) firms to participate in activities by setting up laboratories, chairs and fellowships. Tanitec has started a post-graduate diploma course in IT.
