Indian cement industry has resorted to production cuts, which is bringing about hike in cement prices. The capacity utilisation rates which averaged 81 percent in 1997-98, has declined to 78 percent. Gujarat Ambuja Cements Ltd (GACL) has announced a Rs1,500 crore capital expenditure programme to increase its capacity from the present 6.5 million tonnes per annum to 13 million tonnes per annum. It plans to set up a greenfield project at Sri Lanka. It plans to bring down the cost of production in 1999. GACL's cost per tonne is lower at Rs1,063 compared to ACC (Rs1,436), Madras Cement (Rs1,405) and India Cements (Rs1,676). It has targeted a market share of 20 percent in the eastern region by the end of 1999. It has a 28 percent market share in the cement market in Gujarat, 15-25 percent share in Mumbai and 30 percent share in Punjab. (rk)(vr)
