The government of Colombia has undertaken a campaign to destroy coca crops in the country. Thousands of farmers are involved, and many have participated in demonstrations against the policy. Coca farming, which provides the base for cocaine production, has been highly profitable.

Changing the plan

The US is committed to Plan Colombia, a plan to help Colombia tackle its drugs and guerrillas problems, but the scheme is not wholly successful. The US would do better to help Colombia strengthen its democratic structures.
