Vendors should take responsibility for making environmental assessments of their businesses prior to finding purchasers. Environmentally sensitive industries often have an environmental management policy which if supported by recognized standards, will give possible purchasers a good indication of the environmental duties and hazards within the company. A vendor with environmental data will save questioning from prospective purchasers and help interested parties determine if they wish to go ahead with their offer. It will also prewarn vendors of possible areas of difficulty.

Environmental liability assessment has started to become a key element of the standard procedures which are undertaken before a corporate acquisition is made. It is now widely recognised that some form of environmental due diligence is required for all types of investment.
