Tilt-up construction prove the panels to beat
Article Abstract:
Extensive use is made in Australia, New Zealand and the US of 'tilt-up,' a construction technique for casting large concrete panels on site and putting them into place to create walls. This method has proved extremely successful, even in places where weather conditions are not always conducive to working in the open air. It allows finishes and materials to be combined to produce innovative aesthetic effects, and features in a number of high profile buildings.

Prefab technique breaks out from prison project
Article Abstract:
Site-supplied, fully fitted, prefabricated concrete units are being used for a new 600-inmate prison. Such units allow speed of construction with erection taking half the time of in-situ construction. Each unit is cast from one set of mould shutters and is stringently inspected at all stages. Other uses could include hotels, student accommodation and healthcare buidlings, where repetitive accommodation units are required.

UK opportunities for tilt-up
Article Abstract:
A research project to evaluate opportunities offered by using tilt-up construction techniques is being undertaken by Oxford Brookes University School of Architecture and the Reinforced Concrete Council. Large concrete panels are precast on site instead of being formed in-situ or using factory pre-cast units. The technique emerged in Illinois in the early years of this century and is also currently popular in Australia.
