Article Abstract:

Hampshire County Architects has designed a new theatre for Bedales School. The theatre will be used for teaching and performances and will have a wide range of heating and ventilation needs. Respecting the school's concern for the environment, an innovative cooling system using underground pipes has been devised. The octagonal building will reflect the Arts and Crafts Movement origins of the school and will house a square auditorium, workshops, costume store and rehearsal spaces.

Article Abstract:

Photovoltaics (PV) have considerable potential to boost the use of solar energy in the UK, but cost considerations have so far prevented their widespread use. It may be possible to reduce costs by integrating PV into new or replacement cladding, rather than mounting them separately. However, prices will not fall dramatically in the UK until a volume market emerges. PV manufacturers are therefore looking to exports, as the world PV market has been expanding by around 25% a year.

The two cultures of lighting

Article Abstract:

The development of lighting as an architectural feature and as a functional necessity has followed separate paths and even lighting consultants have been unable to make the two functions converge. However, the use of computer tools can help the integration of functional/sculptural lighting. One such package is the Radiance computer programme which is able to calculate and display the effect of direct and diffuse light on different environments.
