The Russian elections of Dec 1999 have led to greater strength for centrists and liberals, and loss of power for extremists, while the Communists have not made progress. Unity, a party backed by the government, has performed well, and the performance of the Union of Right-Wing Forces, which also supports the government, has been reasonable. prime minister, Vladimir Putin, benefits from personal popularity, and should find it possible to get the Duma to deliver what he wants, though some opposition is possible.

Russia and China are working on creating a strategic alliance that would stabilize their relationship for the foreseeable future. While they have some common interests, in particular a distrust of the US in a world leadership role, any alliance is likely to be just temporary.
