Vicious past shadows the factional strife in Cambodia
Article Abstract:
The political situation in Phnom Penh has worsened following increasing tensions between its two ruling coalitions, the Cambodian People's Party (CPP) and Funcinpec. The former communist CPP has threatened to execute three Funcinpec officials, including deputy chief of staff Gen. Nhek Bun Chhay, if the party tried to seize power. The battle for power has seriously negatively affected government control. A grenade attack on March 30, which killed 19, has worsened people's fears of the outbreak of a civil war while Prime Minister Prince Ranariddh has advised citizens to keep off the streets at night.

Hun Sen nears his date with destiny on Cambodia
Article Abstract:
Cambodian politician Hun Sen has emerged as one of the most prominent figures in the country. His political clout is being likened to the influence exercised by leaders such as Norodom Sihanouk, Mahathir Mohamad, and Suharto. He has survived and has taken part in the most turbulent times of the country during the communist government in the 1970s as part of the Khmer Rouge. His Cambodian People's Party remains the dominant political organization in the country by working at discrediting the royalist Funcinpec and silencing opponents with threats of violence.
