Vietnam's new home
Article Abstract:
Vietnam's imminent membership in the Asean regional group reflects Southeast Asia's ability to adapt to changing circumstances as well as the diplomatic vision of Vietnam's own leaders. It will have dramatic effects on Vietnam's foreign policy and economy by facilitating political and trade ties both regionally and worldwide. Vietnam's domestic affairs, however, are unlikely to be affected. The Cold War ideological boundaries and the confrontational power politics that once marked the region seem to be abolished forever.

Vietnam opens mixed bag
Article Abstract:
The government of Vietnam is keen to sell off a number of state-owned companies, and now plans to establish national, provincial and company level committees to deal with the privatisation programme. The sales will generally involve the issue of shares to management and employees, with the government keeping a golden share. The original privatisation programme was launched in 1992, but only six companies have been involved so far.
