Vivendi makes play in a new business, buying games maker

Jean-Marie Messier, the chairman of Vivendi, believes that his group's $1 billion purchase of Cendant Software will benefit Europe's artistic heritage as it faces that overwhelming force of American marketing. Mr. Messier said that the Cendant acquisition will provide Vivendi with the ability to export European culture. Mr. Messier stated that the move will allow its Havas publishing unit to compete with major multimedia companies such as Microsoft Corp. and Walt Disney Co.

BMC Software to acquire firm for $650 million

Houston-based BMC Software Inc. announced that it has reached an agreement to purchase New Dimension Software Ltd. for over $650 million. This price comes out to $52.50 per share. New Dimension is a developer of computer software based in Israel. BMC stated that the deal will serve to complement its upcoming purchase of Boole & Babbage Inc., a software developer. The merged company will have a staff of approximately 5,000 people in 26 nations.
