Vodafone posts pretax-profit rise of 21% for year

Vodafone Group PLC, a mobile-telephone company, reported a 21-percent improvement in pretax earnings at 650.2 million pounds sterling for fiscal year 1997, which ended Mar. 31, 1998. The company attributed the result, which exceeded market expectations by around 15 million pounds sterling, to increasing overseas returns as well as a stable profit growth in the UK. The group also saw an increase of 41% in its total group sales to 2.47 billion pounds sterling as dividend rose 15% to 5.53 pence per share.
