Wartsila NSD India Ltd (WDIL) has a market share of 70 percent in the domestic medium speed diesel engine segment. Wartsila OY of Finland has provided the technology for diesel and gas engines of more than one mega watt (mw) output. It has an installed capacity of 25 sets per annum at its facility in Khapoli near Mumbai. It produced 13 engines 1995-96 and five engines in 1996-97. It has an order book position of 52.5 mw valued at Rs496 million in 1997- 98 compared to 44.2 mw valued at Rs404 million. The order book position increased to Rs1270 million by April 1998. It has posted a sales of Rs320 million in the first quarter of 1998-99 compared to Rs290 million in the first quarter of 1997-98. The government of India's announcement to increase the investments in power sector will help increase the demand for diesel engine sets. WDIL is likely earn Rs239 million as commission on the 558 mw engine capacity in the next two years. (rk)

TEXAS INSTRUMENTS INDIA LAUNCHES 2 MODEM CHIPS
Article Abstract:
Two front-end modem chips - TLC320AD535 AND TLC320AD545 - were launched by Texas Instruments (India) on January 13, 1999. These chips are used in modems, low speed data communication devices like the ATMs, security systems, point of sale terminals and in embedded voice band applications - TV phones, feature phones, voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP). The company had in March, 1998 introduced Ankur, the first digital signal processor which was completely designed and developed in India. The modem chips offer high resolution data conversion, design flexibility and reduced power dissipation. The modem chip TLC320AD325 is the first chip in the world to combine two codecs into one chip.
