WIPRO LTD NET UP 87%, TURNOVER 15%

The net profit of Wipro Ltd, increased by 87 percent to Rs107.9 crore in 1997-98. Wipro Ltd is the holding company of Wipro Corporation. Its sales turnover increased by 15 percent to Rs1,500 crore. It has a market capitalisation of Rs7,700 crore. The group as a whole recorded sales of Rs1,827 crore and net profit of Rs100.5 crore in 1997-98. Wipro Finance incurred a net loss of Rs 13.80 crore. Of the total sales, Wipro Infotech accounts for Rs1,046 crore, with software contributing Rs392 crore and hardware products and services Rs654 crore. The consumer products and lighting division accounts for Rs340 crore, healthcare systems Rs265 crore, hydraulic cylinders Rs67 crore and financial services Rs92 crore. (gsh)

WIPRO FINANCE REVAMPS BUSINESS OPERATIONS

Wipro Finance has greatly reduced its fund based business and is concentrating on recovery. The company registered a loss of Rs59 crore in 1997-98 and is expected to show losses in 1998-99 as well. It has stopped accepting and renewing deposits and has also stopped its auto-financing activity. The company, which had fixed deposits of Rs100.3 crore as of March 1998, has repaid Rs20 crore and plans to bring down its outstanding deposit base to Rs40 crore by the end of 1998-99. It has now decided to concentrate on financial information services and non-fund based activities like syndication for renewable energy and pollution control. (khr)

WIPRO APPOINTS 3 VCS IN TOP MANAGEMENT RECAST
Article Abstract:
Wipro Ltd appointed Mr Ashok Soota, Mr PS Pai and Mr Arun Thiagarajan as vice-chairmen and executive officers of the company. Mr Pai is with Wipro since 1979. He will be responsible for the Wipro consumer care and lighting group activities. Mr Ashok Soota, who joined Wipro Infotech in 1984, will look after Wipro's software and services group.
