PROTECTION FOR VIDESHI?
Article Abstract:
CK Birla group plans to sell its 50 percent stake in the joint venture with General Motors (GM). GM which makes Opel Astra has already got the management control of the joint venture. Fiat, Mercedes-Benz, Ford, Honda and Daewoo that came to India through joint ventures have become foreign owned companies operating in India. Under the World Trade Organization (WTO), India should permit import of built-up cars and since foreign companies are already present in India, it can immediately allow import of cars. The two Indian companies that compete with foreign owned companies in India are Hindustan Motors and Tata Engineering and Locomotive Company. The government should divest its stake from Maruti Udyog and let Suzuki compete with other car makers of India. The competition is likely to improve the quality of cars and products of local vendors. The local vendors with their world class quality of components may become global suppliers. The mechanics and spare part dealers in India will get a chance to acquire knowledge of the latest technology of automobiles. The editorial further opines that it would give a boost to automotive sports and automotive journalism.(rk)(m)
