Wockhardt posted sales of Rs155.10 crore during the quarter ended September 30, 1998. Wockhardt has improved its ranking from 20 to 11 in the Indian formulations market after the acquisition of Merind. Wockhardt has a presence in pharmaceutical formulations, infant nutrition, IV fluids, agrochemicals and hospitals segments. Four of its products rank amongst India's top 250 branded formulations. It plans to focus on exports. Exports accounted for 24 percent of its total sales during the year ended June 30, 1998. (tsm)(vr)

WPI SHOWS INFLATION DOWN BY 0.87%

The wholesale price index (WPI) has shown a decline of 0.87 percent in the annual rate of inflation to 5.34 percent for the week ended December 26, 1998 compared to 6.21 percent in the previous week. The WPI of gram, tea, gur, kerosene and coconut oil have declined while commodities like rice, wheat, jowar, vanaspati and cotton cloth have increase at higher rates. The wholesale prices of most vegetables have also declined in the month of December 1998. (khr)
