WORLD: VALUE ADDED SERVICE FOR MOBILE PHONES
Article Abstract:
Mobile phone manufacturers, entertainment software companies and mobile phone network operators are developing value added services for mobile phones, with a view to developing UMTS and GPRS technology. Projects include the plan of Codeonline, which specialises in wireless interactive games, and Motorola, mobile phone manufacturer, to launch a Short Message Service (SMS) version of Celador Production's 'Who Wants to be a Millionaire?', which will be offered in 20 languages. According to Juan Montes of Motorola, entertainment is expected to be amongst the most popular value-added services in the next few years from 2001, generating over EUR 6.1bn. His company, which has the rights for Trivial Pursuit, hopes to take a good share of the mobile games market by offering European consumers content from well known brands. Alcatel and Siemens have also signed joint venture deals with Infogrames and THQ, games publishers. Alcatel will launch One Touch 511, a new mobile phone, at beginning July 2001, which will have three Infogrames games on the SIM card. Disney Interactive, a subsidiary of Disney, which is keen to adapt its range of games for the mobile phone market, has signed a deal with Ludigames, a subsidiary of Ubi Soft of Rennes, France, games publisher. Titus International and France Telecom, and In-Fusio and Cegetel-SFR, have also signed deals.
