WTO fervor is renewed
Article Abstract:
China has decided to renew efforts to gain membership in the World Trade Organization (WTO) to strengthen its economic reforms and reassure investors in the country. As part of its campaign for WTO membership, Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji will go to Washington on Apr 1999 to discuss, among other things, China's entry to the WTO. An important issue related to China's admission as a member of the WTO is the liberalization of Chinese agriculture. Contrary to rumors, WTO leaders have declared that China will not be granted special observer status.

Shipping reforms designed to keep the customer happy
Article Abstract:
The Ocean Shipping Reform Act of 1998 will take effect on May 1, 1999, and will cover all container shipping lines crossing the trans-Pacific trade lanes between the Asian and US West Coast ports. Its implementation will put an end to the rate setting business of the Asia-North America Eastbound Rate Agreement and Transpacific Westbound Rate Agreement. The new deregulated environment will allow the shipping lines to determine contract rates, operating costs and contracted volume by themselves.
