WTO holdup draws applause from Chinese executives
Article Abstract:
The executives of China's publicly owned enterprises are relieved over the decision not to allow the country into the World Trade Organization. The eagerness of Chinese politicians to be included in the WTO is not mirrored by majority of Chinese managers who want to slow the process for fear of tougher competition provided by other WTO member countries. Western investors with manufacturing facilities in China are also concerned over the negative impact that lower customs duties and the subsequent flow of imported goods would bring.

Women's conference aims high, but funding may remain low
Article Abstract:
The recently concluded conference on women held in Beijing, China, is a major step towards worldwide recognition of women's rights. However, the proposed social programs that would benefit women may be stalled in some countries due to lack of financial support. Issues discussed during the UN Fourth World Conference on Women included women's rights to determine when and with whom to have sex and teenage girls' rights to seek sexual health care without mandatory parental approval.
