Shaking the cage: feathers fly as 'Bird Men' pecks away at Chinese orthodoxy
Article Abstract:
'Bird Men,' a new satirical play by Guo Shixing, is currently being produced at the Peking People's Art Theatre. This work effectively revives the 'slice-of-life' style of drama that flourished in China in the early 20th century. Guo's work takes a witty and acerbic look at present-day Chinese society in the form of a group of elderly bird fanciers who gather in a city park. Without ever being explicitly political, the play contains elements of allegory, farce, social commentary and fantasy.

Remember the Chinese finger trap?
Article Abstract:
Stock prices at the Shanghai and Shenzhen stock exchanges have reacted differently to the 9-11 August riots in Shenzhen. The Shenzhen exchange has recovered quickly as it is less sensitive to political activities as most of the listed companies are based in Hong Kong or other countries. Prices on the Shanghai exchange are, however, still falling as most companies on the Shanghai exchange cater to the Chinese market and their scrips are directly affected by political unrest.
