Wal-Mart to enter India in venture: Bharti deal gives retailer access to consumer frenzy as U.S. sales growth slows

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. is planning a joint venture with cell phone network company Bharti Enterprises Ltd. as a way to enter India's expanding retail market. Partnering with Bharti Enterprises will allow Wal-Mart to get around Indian regulations forbidding foreign retailers from direct investment in the local retail sector. Wal-Mart, whose U.S sales growth is weakening, plans to open many stores in India.
