War clouds over Pakistan
Article Abstract:
By allying Pakistan with the United States in the war on terrorists hiding in Afghanistan, Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf is risking a fundamentalist Islamic backlash that could topple his government. The United States is aware of the risks, especially since Pakistan has nuclear weapons, and has pledged economic aid to help buoy the popularity of the Pakistani government. There are also some concerns about how loyal the Pakistani army would be to President Musharraf, even though the army supported his coup in 1999, and many officers have been trained in the United States.

APEC backs U.S. in war, but disagrees with tactics
Article Abstract:
The Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation leaders jointly declared their support for the war on terrorism, but did not agree on the methods best employed. The U.S. felt the declaration was a triumph especially because of the support of highly populated Muslim nations such as Indonesia and Malaysia. The United Nations, as opposed to the United States, is urged by the declaration to lead the campaign against terrorism.
