Further delays bog down Vietnam-U.S. trade agreement
Article Abstract:
Normal bilateral trading relations between the US and Vietnam, which the two sides have agreed to in principle in Jul 1999, is expected to be delayed by several years. Analysts are saying that divisions in the Vietnamese Politburo may signal the resurgence of Communist Party hardliners who are worried that economic openness might lead to political instability. The coming US elections is also expected to contribute to the further delay of the passing of the landmark agreement.

A leek in the trade policy
Article Abstract:
Japan put import restraints in place against Chinese agricultural products on April 23, resulting in higher prices in Japan and some breathing room for farmers. Under Word Trade Organization rules, Japan can keep the restraints in place for for years, but no one is sure if the country will because China has retaliated with punitive duties on imports of Japanese products. The dilemma is discussed in the context of higher prices for Japanese leeks.
