War in the heart of Africa
Article Abstract:
Rebels in Congo are supported by Rwanda, with some backing from Uganda, while Angola and Zimbabwe plan to aid Congo's President Laurent Kabila. Namibia is also reportedly sending aid to Kabila, while South African president, Nelson Mandela, opposes moves to back Kabila. There is concern that a large-scale regional conflict could develop, though supporters of Kabila see Uganda and Rwanda as seeking to divide the eastern part of Congo between themselves. If negotiations do not succeed, the break-up of Congo appear more likely.

Someone else's doing, someone else's problem
Article Abstract:
Tutsi rebels have seized control of parts of eastern Zaire, after the Zairean government had tried to expel their them. Support for the rebels by the Rwandan government is suspect but not proven. Their target seems to be the millions of Rwandan Hutu would-be rebels in Zairean refugee camps.

Fighting between Zairean soldiers and Tutsi has displaced a half million Hutu refugees in east Zaire, though reliable reports are difficult to obtain. The Zairean government, believing that Rwanda sought to establish a Tutsi empire, tried to expel Tutsis from the region.
