West European car sales jumped 8% in first half
Article Abstract:
New automobile sales increased faster than predicted in Western Europe during the first-half of 1999. Analysts believe that car sales in the region will increase from 1% to 2% for the entire 1999 year. Previous forecasts predicted a decline in sales for the year. Regional car sales rose to 1.35 million in June 1999. This was an 11% improvement over the same period in 1998. Sales between January and June rose 8% to 8.1 million units.

VW's sales rise, but company falters in Asia, South America
Article Abstract:
Volkswagen AG (VW) posted an increase in global sales of 8.5% for the first-half of 1999. However, the car maker's sales were still reflecting sluggish car markets in South America and Asia. The board member heading VW's sales and marketing operations, Robert Buechelhofer, kept his "subdued outlook" for the car maker's second-half sales development. VW posted a rise in sales to 2.48 million vehicles for the first half of the year.
