Scotland and the multinationals
Article Abstract:
The Locate in Scotland (LIS) bureau chief Ian Robertson believes that Scotland faces tough competition from West Germany, France, and Ireland relative to attracting foreign businesses to locate or invest in Scotland. LIS has been criticized for misrepresenting Scotland as a union-free country to multinational corporations. LIS offers regional grants to corporations such as NEC, Shinetsu-Handotai, Motorola, Timex, and Hyster to locate operations in Scotland. Some critics suggest that these multinationals will accept the grants, operate in Scotland for a relatively short period, and move on to other countries when the grants expire. The economic benefits of foreign firms are also questionable: the foreign firms have failed to stimulate local economies, and Scottish firms are either unwilling or unable to become suppliers to the foreign companies.

Networking - the corporate way round international discord
Article Abstract:
Corporations doing business in the international markets are faced with the paradox that while businesses are becoming more interdependent globally, cultural differences are becoming more distinct. Networking, the exploitation of informal networks between managers, will give corporations the means to circumvent international discord. The creation of cross-organizational networks will benefit corporations in many ways, including enhancing information creation and sharing, speeding up information gathering, and stimulating innovation. Organizations can create networks by fostering shared values and promoting common objectives, encouraging interaction, and educating management. The networking skills managers require to be a success include interpersonal skills and reciprocity.
