What should be strategic?
Article Abstract:
The UK government's Greater London Assembly Bill of 1998 delineates the responsibilities of the Mayor of London. Development control and the Spatial Development Strategy are key elements in the Bill, but the government maintains that design is not a matter of strategy. This stance fails to acknowledge one of the main reasons for establishing a mayoral role, which was to create a leader who would have a vision for improving the quality of the built environment. The only real hope of changing the government's position on this matter lies with the Urban Task Force.

Getting the best out of planners
Article Abstract:
It is important for architects in the UK to be aware of a range of planning-related issues. They should be familiar with a site's planning history and with the status of the local development plan. It is also important to know the relevant policies and precedents and to research potential problems with neighbours. The architect should function as a mediator between the client with a single goal and the bureaucratic and political procedures of the planning authority. Architects have a number of weapons at their disposal, particularly design.
